Existing records

World record 47.60 s Germany Democratic Republic 1949GDR Marita Koch Canberra , Australia October 6, 1985
European record
EM record 48.16 s EM Athens , Greece September 8, 1982

The European Championship record, which had existed since 1982 , remained safe even after these European Championships.

doping

There was a doping case in this competition.

In a doping test on July 5, 2016 of the Ukrainian Olha Semljak , who was eliminated in the semi-finals, a testosterone concentration was found to be significantly too high . Since she had previously been proven to have been doping fraud, she was suspended for not four but eight years from July 5, 2016 to July 4, 2024, and all of her results since the positive doping test were canceled.

Since Olha Semljak, as one of the eleven strongest athletes on the European annual best list, only entered the competition in the semifinals, she hadn't deprived anyone of the right to start the semifinals in the preliminary round. So at least there were no serious disadvantages for other athletes.

execution

For this discipline, a new competition mode was used for the first time. The eleven strongest athletes on the European annual best list did not have to compete in the preliminary round, but only entered in the semi-finals.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.
