Gunta Vaičule (born March 9, 1995 in Rēzekne as Gunta Latiševa-Čudare ) is a Latvian sprinter .

Athletic career

In 2011 Gunta Vaičule qualified for the first time for a major international event, the World Youth Championships near the French city of Lille , where she was eliminated over 100 meters in the preliminary round and over 200 meters in the semi-finals. Shortly afterwards she was fourth over 200 meters at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Trabzon . In 2012 she was eliminated in the first round of the Junior World Championships in Barcelona over 400 meters. In 2013 she was fourth at the Junior European Championships in Rieti . In 2014 she made it to the semi-finals of the Junior World Championships in Eugene and qualified for the European Championships in Zurich , where she was eliminated again in the first round.

In 2015, she qualified for the U23 European Championships in Tallinn , where she was eliminated in both the 400 meters and the Latvian 4 x 100 meters relay in the run-up. However, she qualified for the World Championships in Beijing , where, as expected, she could not reach the semi-finals . In 2016 she took part in the European Championships in Amsterdam and made it to the semifinals there. In August, she participated in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she was eliminated in the first round . In 2017 she won the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland in 52.00 s. At the World Championships in London she reached the semifinals . A few weeks later she won the silver medal over 200 meters behind the Italian Irene Siragusa at the World Student Games in Taipei .

In 2018 she took part in the European Championships in Berlin over 400 meters and was eliminated there with 51.60 seconds in the semifinals. She also reached the semi-finals over 400 meters at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 2019 , in which she was eliminated with 53.53 seconds. In July she took part in the 200-meter run again at the Student World Games in Naples , where she finished fourth in 23.12 s. So she qualified for the World Championships in London , where she was eliminated with 23.32 s in the first round .

In 2014 and 2015 Vaičule became the Latvian champion in the 200-meter run, as well as the 400 -meter run in 2015 and 2019 and in 2017 in the 100-meter run . In the hall she secured the title over 200 meters in 2014 and 2015 as well as 2016 and 2018. In 2015 and 2016 she was also the indoor champion over 60 meters.

Personal

In September 2018 she married the farmer Mārtiņš Vaičulis and has been Gunta Vaičule ever since .
