Christine Ijeoma Ohuruogu MBE (born May 17, 1984 in London ) is a British sprinter . She is world champion and Olympic champion in the 400-meter run .

Life

The daughter of Nigerian immigrants grew up in the London borough of Stratford . She played netball in her youth , only started athletics at the age of 16 and finally switched to her in 2003. Right away she was third at the 2003 Junior European Championships. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , she failed in the semifinals, but came in fourth with the 4 x 400 meter relay .

At the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki there was bronze for the British season in the cast Donna Fraser , Catherine Murphy , Ohuruogu, Lee McConnell ; in the individual competition, however, came out again in the semifinals. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, she won bronze in 50.28 s. In the summer, a one-year ban was imposed on her because she had missed three doping tests since October 2005 . An originally imposed ban on their association for the Olympic Games , however, was later lifted by an arbitration tribunal.

Shortly after her suspension ended on August 5, 2007, she started at the World Championships in Osaka and won the title with her personal best of 49.61 s. With the British relay she won bronze. A year later, Ohuruogu won the gold medal over 400 meters at the Beijing Olympics . In 49.62 s she was just ahead of Shericka Williams from Jamaica and the American favorite Sanya Richards .

At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin Ohuruogu came in fifth in the individual and fourth in the relay. In 2011 she started at the World Championships in Daegu , but she made a false start in the run-up and was disqualified. In 2012 she became indoor world champion with the relay . At the Olympic Games in London she ran for a silver medal.

In March 2013 she won the gold medal in the 4-by-400-meter relay at the 2013 European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden . In the same year she became world champion in Moscow with the new British record of 49.41 s. In addition, she won the bronze medal with the relay, as well as at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing . At the 2016 Olympic Games in London , she won another bronze medal with the 4 x 400 meter relay.

Christine Ohuruogu has a competition weight of 70 kg with a height of 1.75 m and competes for the Newham and Essex Beagles club. She graduated from University College London with a degree in Linguistics in 2005 .
