Lee McConnell (born October 9, 1978 in Glasgow ) is a former British athlete who is successful in both the 400-meter run and the 400-meter hurdles .

She began her career as a high jumper , but finally switched to the 400-meter course when she finished 14th in her discipline at the Universiade in 1999 , but won bronze in the 4-by-400-meter relay . At the Universiade 2001 she was sixth over 400 meters, with the relay she won silver. At the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, she was fifth with the British relay in 3: 26.94 min.

In 2002 she improved her personal record over 400 meters several times. At the Commonwealth Games in Manchester she won silver in 51.68s over 400 meters behind Aliann Pompey from Guyana and took fourth place with the Scottish relay. At the European Championships in Munich she won bronze in 51.02 s behind Olesja Sykina and Grit Breuer and was fourth with the British relay.

At the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis, McConnell was seventh in the 400-meter run in 51.07 s and came in sixth place in the relay. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, she was eliminated over 400 meters in the semifinals. The British relay with Donna Fraser , Catherine Murphy , Christine Ohuruogu and McConnell ran into fourth place in 3: 25.22 minutes.

In Madrid, the British relay at the European Indoor Championships 2005 with Melanie Purkiss , Fraser, Murphy and McConnell won bronze in 3: 29.81 minutes behind Russia (which set an indoor world record with 3: 28.00 minutes) and Poland. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , McConnell retired over 400 meters again in the semifinals. The British relay with McConnell, Fraser, Nicola Sanders and Ohuruogu ran 3: 24.44 minutes and won bronze behind Russia and Jamaica, with five hundredths of a second ahead of the Polish women.

At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, McConnell competed in the 400-meter hurdles . Behind the undisputed victorious Jana Pittman , three runners fought for the other two medals. Tasha Danvers-Smith (ENG) won silver in 55.17 s, followed by McConnell in 55.25 s and Nicola Sanders (ENG) in 55.32 s. At the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006 , McConnell failed in the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles and was fourth with the British relay.

At the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 2007 , the British relay team with Emma Duck , Sanders, Kim Wall and McConnell won bronze in 3: 28.69 minutes behind Belarus and Russia. In the 400-meter run at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, McConnell was eliminated in the 400-meter semifinals, while her compatriots Ohuruogu and Sanders won gold and silver. In the season, the cast Ohuruogu, Marilyn Okoro , McConnell and Sanders set a national record with 3: 20.04 minutes and won bronze.

In 2008 McConnell switched permanently to the 400-meter flat course. She took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing, but was eliminated in the semifinals. At the 2009 World Championships she was fourth with the season. The British relay team achieved the same place at the 2010 World Indoor Championships . In the open air, however, the British women won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Barcelona .

At the 2011 European Indoor Championships , McConnell won the silver medal with the relay. At the World Championships in Daegu she reached the semi-finals in a single run and was fourth in the season. In 2012, she was fifth in the 400-meter run and fourth in the 4-by-400-meter relay at the European Championships in Helsinki . At the Olympic Games in London she reached the semi-finals and in the relay competition, the British were fifth.

Lee McConnell is 1.78 m tall and weighs 64 kg. She graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in Sports Science in 2000 .
