Valerie Brisco ( Valerie Ann Brisco , during their marriage Brisco-Hooks ; born July 6, 1960 in Greenwood , Mississippi ) is a former American sprinter and three-time Olympic champion .

Career

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , she won the gold medal in the 200-meter run ahead of Florence Griffith-Joyner (USA) and Merlene Ottey (JAM). She also won the gold medal in the 400 meter run in front of Chandra Cheeseborough (USA) and Kathy Smallwood-Cook (GBR), as well as the team gold medal in the 4 x 400 meter relay race together with her teammates Lillie Leatherwood , Sherri Howard and Chandra Cheeseborough.

At the 1987 World Championships , she took third place with the 4 x 400 meter relay. Besides Marie-José Perec at the 1996 Olympic Games , she is the only woman to have won both the 200 and 400 meters in an Olympic event.

In 1981 she married the football player Alvin Hooks. The marriage, which resulted in a son, was divorced in 1987.
