The men's 400-meter hurdles at the 2016 European Athletics Championships was held from July 6th to 8th, 2016 in the Olympic Stadium in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam .
European champion who was Turk Yasmani Copello . He won ahead of the Spaniard Sergio Fernández . Bronze went to the defending champion Kariem Hussein from Switzerland .

The since 1982 existing EM -record was not in danger even at these European Championships.
The clear fastest time of 48.42 s was achieved by future European champion Yasmani Copello in the second semifinal race, who set a new Turkish national record.

For this discipline, a new competition mode was used for the first time. The twelve strongest athletes on the European annual best list did not have to compete in the preliminary round, but only entered in the semi-finals.

The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first two athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.
