Kariem Hussein (born January 4, 1989 in Münsterlingen ) is a Swiss - Egyptian athlete . His greatest success is winning the title in the 400 meter hurdles at the 2014 European Championships in Zurich .

Athletic career

Kariem Hussein is the son of an Egyptian father and a Swiss mother. His father Ehab, an osteopath by profession , came to Switzerland in the late 1970s; he previously played volleyball in the Egyptian national team and at a club in Dubai . The son was an enthusiastic footballer at FC Tägerwilen in his youth . When Hussein began studying medicine , he turned to athletics because of the more individual training options and tried the 200-meter , 400-meter and 110-meter hurdles and high jump disciplines . Finally, he decided on the 400-meter hurdles discipline .

Hussein contested his first race over 400 meter hurdles on July 18, 2009 in Bern, where he just missed qualifying for the U23 European Championships with 52.52 seconds . In the same year he became Swiss runner-up, and between 2011 and 2014 he won the championship title four times in a row. In 2012 he qualified for the Olympic Games in London , but could not compete due to an injury.

On August 15, 2014, in front of a home crowd in Zurich , Hussein won the title of European champion in the 400 meter hurdles, in a new personal best of 48.96 seconds. He was also the only Swiss to win a gold medal for the host country at these European championships . Two weeks later, on August 28, 2014, Hussein reached fourth place over the 400 meter hurdles at the athletics meeting in Zurich in a new personal best of 48.70 seconds. On September 13, at the 2014 Athletics Continental Cup in Marrakech, he achieved another improvement to 48.47 seconds, which was also the best time for the European season.

On August 8, 2015, he ran another personal best over the 400 meter hurdles in Zug with 48.45 seconds. At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing , Kariem Hussein reached the semi-finals and was then eliminated in ninth place. Shortly afterwards, he won the sport festival Weltklasse Zürich in his parade discipline, thus ensuring the first Swiss victory in the main program of the meeting in 14 years. At the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam , Hussein won bronze with 49.10 seconds.

In 2016, Hussein was nominated for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There he was eliminated due to an injury in the preliminary run. At the 2017 World Championships in London he reached the final and finished eighth. In January 2018, Hussein suffered a ruptured hamstring during a training camp in South Africa . In July he canceled his participation in the European Championships in Berlin in August of that year; he continues to suffer from health problems and is in the middle of the state examination . At the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha , he was eliminated with a sixth place after the preliminary run.

In 2018, Hussein moved to the Netherlands for a year to train with Laurent Meuwly in Papendal . In Zurich he has since been looked after by Helen Barnett-Burkart .
