Anatoly Ivanovich Julin

Anatoli Iwanowitsch Julin ( Russian Анатолий Иванович Юлин , English transcription Anatoliy Yulin ; born March 10, 1929 in Beketowo , Tula Oblast , † August 29, 2002 ) was a track and field athlete who competed for the Soviet Union. In 1954 he became European champion in the 400 meter hurdles .

Julin did not win a title at Soviet championships. In the years 1952 to 1954 he took second place behind Yuri Litujew , in 1951, 1955 and 1957 Julin was third, in 1948 and 1949 fourth.

At the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki , Julin was fourth in 52.8 s. With a gap of six tenths of a second he was clearly behind third-placed New Zealander John Holland ; Litujew won silver behind Charles Moore from the USA. In 1954 at the European Championships in Bern , Julin won the third run in 52.1 s, and he won his semifinals in 51.6 s. In the final he managed the fastest run of his career. In 50.5 s he defeated Litujew, who finished second after 50.8 s. Litujew held the world record since 1953 with 50.4 s, Julin led the world best of the year in 1954 with his 50.5 s, in 1955 he again reached the top position in the world with 51.0 s.

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 Julin was eliminated in 51.7 s in the semifinals. Litujew was the only European to reach the final and finished fourth. Together with Litujew, Julin competed in the Soviet 4 x 400 meter relay . In 3: 11.1 minutes, the season could not qualify for the final. In 1958 at the European Championships in Stockholm Julin reached the final again and finished 5th in 52.3 s.

The native Russian lived in Belarus from 1948. With a height of 1.75 m, his competition weight was 70 kg.
