Continental Cup 2010 Continental Cup 2018

The 2nd Athletics Continental Cup (official name 2014 IAAF Continental Cup ) took place on September 13th and 14th, 2014 in the Moroccan city of Marrakech . A total of 40 competitions, 20 each for men and women, were held in the Stade de Marrakech .

criticism

The organizer and the format of the Continental Cup faced severe criticism. A major point of criticism was the bad atmosphere in the stadium due to the lack of spectators. No official attendance figures were published, but the stadium tiers were described as "deserted". The Fachmagazin Leichtathletik called the Continental Cup "the poorest spectators and the weakest world event in the history of athletics". The competition also does not throw a good light on the world of athletics, but is rather anti-advertising for the sport. IAAF Vice President Serhij Bubka admitted deficits in public relations work on site and promised the organizers that they would be given more support in the future.

Monetary policy was also criticized. The prize money of 2.9 million US dollars was much higher than at Diamond League meetings. In comparison, however, far fewer top stars took part and, considering the athletes' budget, the performances were also moderate. In addition, the high expenses could not even come close to being covered by ticket income.

Competition mode

Four continental teams competed against each other: America, Africa, Asia / Pacific (Asia and Oceania) and Europe. In each individual competition, two athletes from each continent competed, each from two different countries. In principle, athletes were allowed to compete in several disciplines, but a double start in the 3000 and 5000 meter run was not permitted. Each continent provided a team in the relay competitions.

Points were awarded for each competition according to the following key:

space singles Season
1 8th 15th
2 7th 11
3 6th 7th
4th 5 3
5 4th
6th 3
7th 2
8th 1

To determine the winning team, the points from all 40 competitions were added up.

Prize money structure

In total, prize money totaling 2.9 million US dollars was distributed. They were distributed as follows:

space singles Season
1 $ 30,000 $ 30,000
2 $ 15,000 $ 20,000
3 $ 10,000 $ 10,000

5 $ 5,000
