Folashade Abigeal Abugan (born December 17, 1990 in Akure ) is a Nigerian athlete who specializes in the 400-meter run .

Athletic career

Abugan made an international appearance very early on. At the age of only 15 she celebrated her first successes in the adult sector. It was used in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in the Nigerian 4-by-400-meter relay , which won the bronze medal behind the teams from Australia and India in 3: 31.83 minutes. In the same year she reached the final in the 400-meter run at the Junior World Championships in Beijing and finished eighth there in 52.87 s. With the relay she won the silver medal there with a new U20 African record of 3: 30.84 minutes. In the following year she won the African Games in Algiers with the relay in 3: 29.74 min and won her first individual medal in the adult category over 400 meters when she won the bronze medal in 51.44 seconds behind Amantle Montsho from Botswana and her compatriot Joy Eze secured. So she qualified for the first time for the World Championships in Osaka , where she was eliminated with 52.58 s in the first round and also with the relay in 3: 27.97 min could not qualify for the final.

In 2008 she won the silver medal behind Montsho at the African Championships in Addis Ababa in 50.89 seconds and won the 4-by-400-meter relay in 3: 30.07 minutes. Two months later she was in Bydgoszcz at the Junior World Championships in 51.84 s world champion over 400 meters. She then started at the Olympic Games in Beijing, where she finished seventh with the relay in 3: 23.74 mins in the final and reached the semi-finals in the individual competition , where she was eliminated with 51.30 seconds. In 2009 she won the Junior African Championships in Bambous with a new championship record of 52.02 minutes and with the relay. At the World Championships in Berlin two weeks later, she was eliminated in the 400-meter run with 51.75 s in the semi-final round and came sixth in the relay in 3: 28.55 minutes. At the 2010 African Championships in Nairobi , she successfully defended her title with the relay in 3: 29.26 minutes and won the bronze medal in the individual competition in 51.63 seconds behind Montsho and Senegalese Amy Mbacké Thiam . In the same year she competed at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi . There she first won silver medals in the 400-meter run behind Amantle Montsho from Botswana and with the 4-by-400-meter relay. However, both results were canceled after she tested positive for illegal testosterone use on a doping control . She was then banned for three years until 2013.

In 2014 she took part with the relay at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot and reached fifth place there in 3: 31.59 minutes. At the World Relays in the Bahamas , she finished third in 3: 23.41 minutes. She then took part again in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , where she reached fourth place over 400 meters in 52.33 s and won the silver medal behind Jamaica in 3: 24.71 min. She then won the African Championships in Marrakech in 51.21 s for the first time over 400 meters and also with the relay in 3: 28.87 min. At the Athletics Continental Cup there , she was sixth over 400 meters in 51.78 seconds and came third in the African relay in 3: 25.51 minutes. In 2017, at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku , she won the silver medal in both the 4-by-100-meter and the 4-by-400-meter relay in 46.20 s and 3: 34.47 min. In addition, she could not finish her final run over 400 meters. She was also disqualified in the run-up to her fourth Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast . In August she won the African Championships in Asaba for the fourth time with the Nigerian relay team in 3: 31.17 min.

From 2008 to 2010 and 2014, Abugan was the Nigerian champion in the 400-meter run.
