doping
In this discipline there were three subsequently convicted doping sinners. This affected two seasons, the results of which were canceled.
- Russia - first in second place:
- Anastassija Kapatschinskaja was subsequently disqualified as a repeat offender on August 19, 2016, her individual placement and the result of the relay were canceled.
- Tatjana Firowa was subsequently convicted as a doping sinner, her individual placement and the result of the relay were canceled.
- Belarus - initially in fourth place in the finish:
- Svyatlana Ussowitsch was convicted of doping abuse in November. With her, the Belarusian relay lost their rating.
The season of Jamaica, placed behind the Russians, moved up one place and received the silver medal. All other teams came up two places each, which brought the British women the bronze medal. The damage to the relays of France and Ukraine, which would have qualified for the finals if the results of Russia had been canceled, was irreparable.

In the final there was the following line-up change compared to the preliminary:
- USA - Allyson Felix ran instead of Natasha Hastings.
There were also changes in the line-up in the relays that were subsequently disqualified for one runner due to doping fraud. The doping-contaminated athletes were, however, already used in the heats in both relays, so that these results had to be canceled as well.
- Russia - Julija Guschtschina and Anastassija Kapatschinskaja ran instead of Jelena Migunowa and Tatiana Weschkurowa.
- Belarus - Julia Yushchanka was replaced by Hanna Kosak.
The two seasons from the United States and Russia were favored. The Russians had brought three runners into the individual finals, but two of them had to be subsequently disqualified for doping fraud - the same two who were also responsible for the later disqualification of the Russian relay. The US had in 2004 won the gold medal and also the World Cup -Titel 2007 . Jamaica also entered the race with good opportunities as a two-time runner-up in 2007 and 2005 and as a bronze medalist in 2004. Other candidates for a top placement were above all the two-time World Cup third from Great Britain. Because of their disqualifications, the role of Russia and Belarus in the final will not be discussed further below.
After the first change, the leading squadrons were still close together. Jamaica led ahead of the United States, Britain, and Nigeria. The second US runner Allyson Felix put her team in the lead and Jamaica lost the connection in the last hundred meters. Nigeria and the UK were even further behind. Sanya Richards as the last runner made the Olympic victory of the US relay perfect with a strong lap. The distances to the following teams were considerable. Jamaica was second almost two seconds behind. The British won the bronze medal just over two more seconds back. Cuba came fourth with a new national record, ahead of Nigeria and Germany.
It was the fourth Olympic victory in a row in a US season over 4 x 400 meters .
