doping

In Heptathlon of Beijing , there were two cases of doping .

  • Ljudmyla Blonska , Ukraine. It was one of the few cases with timely evidence of doping. Four days after her first appearance at these games, the heptathlon, she tested positive for the anabolic steroid methyltestosterone . After the B sample was also positive the next day, it was initially suspended. Another day later she was disqualified and permanently excluded from the games. A lifelong ban followed later.
  • Tatiana Chernova , Russia - initially fourth. She was disqualified on April 24, 2017 after being convicted of doping abuse.

The results and the results of the doping sinners are not discussed further in the following overviews or in the summary description. The athletes placed after the disqualified athletes in the final moved up two places in the official ranking.

Starting position

The actual top favorite was the Swedish European record holder Carolina Klüft , who had dominated the heptathlon for many years. She was European champion in 2002 and 2006 , world champion in 2003 , 2005 and 2007 and Olympic champion in 2004 . But she wanted something new, concentrated on the long jump and triple jump while leaving the field to other athletes in the heptathlon.

Another favorite, the Ukrainian Ljudmyla Blonska was the right after the competition doping transferred and will therefore not be mentioned in the following description of the competitions may like the 2,017 disqualified for doping fraud Russian Tatjana Chernova. The focus was primarily on British World Cup third Kelly Sotherton, also Olympic third from 2004 and World Cup fifth from 2005, US-American Hyleas Fountain and Olympic runner-up from 2004 Austra Skujytė from Lithuania, also World Cup fourth from 2005 and World Cup sixth from 2007, which, however, in the Olympic year 2008 did not have the shape of previous years. In the broader group of promising candidates for top placements, the two Germans Lilli Schwarzkopf and Jennifer Oser were to be named. Schwarzkopf was EM -Third of 2006 World Cup -Fünfte 2007, Oeser had occupied at the European Championships in 2006 and finished fourth at the World Championships in 2007 ranked seventh. In this wider circle, the Ukrainian Nataliya Dobrynska as Olympic Eighth in 2004, was among EM -Sechste of 2006 World Cup -Achte of of 2007.

Summary

Over 100 meter hurdles , the first discipline, Fountain showed off her strength with 12.78 seconds. Canadian Jessica Zelinka also stayed under thirteen seconds with 12.97 seconds. Behind them, especially the Russian Anna Bogdanowa - 13.09 s and Sotherton - 13.09 s presented themselves in very good shape. Dobrynska stayed within their possibilities with 13.44 s, while Oeser and Schwarzkopf were already behind here.

Fountain also achieved the best result in the high jump together with Australian Kylie Wheeler. Both athletes jumped 1.89 m. Bogdanowa was not far behind at 1.86 m, a height that the French Marie Collonvillé also mastered. Sotherton crossed 1.83 m like the Dutch Jolanda Keizer and the Brazilian Lucimara da Silva. Dobrynska, Schwarzkopf and Oeser recorded 1.80 m each. Fountain had shown their strengths to the full and led with 2251 points. She was 86 points ahead of Bogdanowa, 134 points ahead of Wheeler and 138 points ahead of Sotherton. Collonvillé, Zelinka, da Silva and Dobrynska followed.

In the shot put Dobrynska with 17.29 m and Skujytė with 17.02 m were well ahead of their competitors. Keizer was the only one to surpass the 15-meter mark with 15.15 m, followed by many athletes who were close together, among them Schwarzkopf with 14.61 m. Bogdanowa hit 14.08 m, Sotherton came on 13.87 m, while Fountain weakened with 13.36 m and lost their lead to Dobrynska. 3052 points were now on the account of the Ukrainian, Fountain was second with 3002 points 38 points ahead of Bogdanova. In fourth place, Sotherton was 154 points behind Dobrynska. Behind them were Keizer, Skujytė, Zelinka, Wheeler and the three Germans Schwarzkopf, Sonja Kesselschläger and Oeser.

In the 200-meter run , the final discipline of the first day, Fountain regained her lead. With 23.21 s she ran the fastest time ahead of Sotherton and the Polish Karolina Tymińska - both 23.39 s each. Zelinka, Keizer and Wheeler also undercut the 24-second mark. With 24.39 seconds, Dobrynska also showed a good performance for her personally. After four disciplines, Fountain led with an excellent 4090 points and had thus worked out a lead of 64 points over Dobrynska. Sotherton was third, 58 points behind Dobrynska. Another sixteen points back was Bogdanowa in fourth place ahead of Keizer - 196 points behind Fountain. Zelinka, Tymińska and Wheeler followed on the next places.

On the second day Dobrynska came up trumps again. In the long jump , she achieved the greatest distance ten centimeters before Tymińska with 6.63 m. Bogdanowa - 6.45 m, Fountain - 6.38 m and Sotherton - 6.33 m - were not too far behind. But for Dobrynska it was enough to take the lead again with 5045 points and sixteen points ahead of Fountain. Bogdanowa displaced with a deficit of 132 points on Dobrynska Sotherton in fourth place. Tymińska was fifth, ahead of Keizer and Zelinka.

The javelin throw as the penultimate discipline brought about some shifts in the ranking. Three athletes - the Polish Kamila Chudzik with 52.05 m, Schwarzkopf with 51.88 m and the Finnish Niina Kelo with 51.48 m - exceeded the 50-meter mark. Dobrynska achieved the fifth best distance with 48.60 m, while all other front placed heptathletes were clearly behind. Especially Bogdanowa and Sotherton lost a lot of ground with widths of just over 35 meters. In the intermediate standings, Dobrynska was already 155 points ahead of Fountain and 365 points over Sotherton. Zelinka - 383 P back, Bogdanowa - 386 P, Keizer - 398 P and Schwarzkopf - 450 P - followed. Behind were Wheeler, Tymińska and Oeser.

With regard to the final 800-meter run, this clearly set the course for this heptathlon, gold and silver were almost certainly awarded to Dobrynska and Fountain. Only a fall, an injury or the like could have brought about a change. But the battle for the bronze medal was still completely open. Sotherton in third and Keizer in sixth only had 33 points separated, with Zelinka and Bogdanowa in between.

So Natalja Dobrynska was finally Olympic champion despite a not intoxicating 800 meter time of 2: 17.72 min. She set a new personal best with 6733 points. Hyleas Fountain was also only a good two seconds faster with 2: 14.45 minutes, but that was clearly enough to win the silver medal with a deficit of 114 points on the Ukrainian. Kelly Sotherton prevailed in the battle for bronze with the second best 800 meter time of 2: 07.34 minutes. She was 26 hundredths of a second ahead of Jessica Zelinka, who finished fourth in the final ranking. Anna Bogdanowa finished fourth and was fifth in the Olympics. The fastest 800-meter runner was Karolina Tymińska in 2: 07.08 min, with which she was sixth in the overall standings. Lilli Schwarzkopf improved with her 2: 10.91 min and the excellent javelin throw to seventh place overall ahead of Jolanda Keizer.

Natalja Dobrynska won the first Olympic victory and also the first medal for Ukraine in the Olympic all-around competition.
Kelly Sotherton won the second bronze medal in the heptathlon after 2004.
