Course of competition

August 16, 2008 , 9:00 a.m.

On the first half of the route, a moderate pace was set with 2-kilometer sections between 8:04 and 8:14 minutes. After eight kilometers Brugnetti had taken the lead and gradually accelerated the pace after half of the course, the times of all subsequent 2-kilometer sections were under eight minutes. The top group, which had been large until then, has now slowly become smaller. After twelve kilometers, nine walkers were still in front, together with Brugnetti in the lead. That changed from kilometer fourteen. Bortschin now took the initiative and it got really fast. So the group soon fell apart and the Russian separated himself more and more from his colleagues. The Australian Jared Tallent was second at sixteen, two seconds behind, Brugnetti followed another second. Two kilometers from the finish, Pérez had worked his way up to the first pursuer position, his gap to Bortschin was only three seconds, while Tallent - 16 s back - and Brugnetti - 25 s back - could no longer keep the distance to the leader. The Chinese Wang Hao followed in fifth place - 27 s back.

Valery Borchin ended his competition at high speed and finally became Olympic champion with fourteen seconds ahead of Jefferson Pérez. Jared Tallent was 41 seconds behind Bortschin at the finish and won the bronze medal. Wang Hao was fourth just five seconds after Tallent, another four seconds back was Ivano Brugnetti in fifth. Australian Luke Adams finished sixth, six seconds behind Brugnetti. Francisco Javier Fernández followed well behind in seventh place.
