The favorites for these races were the three US runners who made the best impression of all the participants in the semifinals. LoLo Jones in particular - sixth at the World Championships last year - had shone with her 12.43 seconds. But Damu Cherry also looked very good as the winner of the second heat, wafer-thin before Dawn Harper. The Jamaican World Cup third Delloreen Ennis-London was one of the main competitors, as was her compatriot Brigitte Foster-Hylton and the Australian Sally McLellan - later Sally Pearson.

In the final, three US women, two Jamaicans and one hurdler each from Australia, Canada and Great Britain faced each other.

On the first half of the track, McLellan, who got off the starting blocks fastest, built a lead with a flawless run. Then Jones irresistibly stormed past her and already looked like the sure winner. But she touched the penultimate hurdle and was completely out of her rhythm. Dawn Harper benefited most from her mishap, who managed to win a clear victory in the last few meters. It was extremely close behind the gold medalist. With exactly one tenth of a second behind, Sally McLellan and the Canadian Priscilla Lopes-Schliep took second and third place simultaneously in this order. Just a hundredth of a second later, Damu Cherry crossed the finish line in fourth and Delloreen Ennis-London in fifth. Another hundredth of a second back was Brigitte Foster-Hylton sixth ahead of LoLo Jones and the British Sarah Claxton.
