initial situation
In this competition, the Czech Roman Šebrle was the clearly dominant athlete in recent years. He was Olympic champion in 2004 , world champion in 2007 and European champion from 2006 , also vice world champion from 2003 behind the American Tom Pappas and vice world champion from 2005 behind Pappas' compatriot Bryan Clay. In addition, Šebrle held both the world record and the Olympic record . But he did not start unchallenged here. His World Cup victory was just 32 points ahead of Jamaican Maurice Smith and 90 points ahead of the Kazakh Olympic third in 2004 and third in the 2003 World Cup, Dmitri Karpov. However, Bryan Clay, who had defeated Šebrle at the 2005 World Championships and also competed as a silver medalist in 2004, was viewed as the fiercest opponent. Other candidates for top positions included the Hungarian Vice European Champion from 2006 and World Cup third from 2005 Attila Zsivóczky, the Russian European Championship third from 2006 and World Cup fourth from 2007 Alexei Drosdow, the German World Cup fourth from 2005 and World Cup fifth from 2007 André Niklaus and the other two Americans Trey Hardee and Tom Pappas.
Summary
Over 100 meters , the first discipline, Clay played his sprint strengths with 10.44 s and took the lead with 989 points. His compatriot Trey Hardee - 10.52 s - and the Ukrainian Oleksij Kasjanow - 10.52 s - were not far behind. Šebrle was already clearly behind with 11.21 s.
Clay was also the best decathlete in the long jump with 7.78 m. Hardee was not far behind with 7.72 m, the third best distance was achieved by German Michal Schrader with 7.70 m and Šebrle also showed a good performance with 7.68 m. Clay had played out his strengths and led with 1994 points. He was 34 points ahead of Hardee, 76 points ahead of Kasyanow and 102 points ahead of Schrader. Belarusian Andrej Krautschanka was fifth - 162 points back - ahead of Jangy Addy from Liberia - 174 p. And Šebrle, who already had two hundred points to catch up.
In the shot put , four athletes exceeded the 16-meter mark. the Russian Alexander Pogorelow - 16.53 m, Clay - 16.27 m, Drosdow - 16.26 m - and the Iranian Hadi Sepehrzad - 16.02 m. In the overall standings, Clay maintained his lead with 2862 points. Kasyanow was second, 145p behind, Hardee third, 204p behind. It was followed by Pogorelow - 230 P - and the Cuban Yordanis García - 250 P. Šebrle was tenth, 312 points behind Clay.
In the high jump there were four athletes who jumped 2.11 m as the best decathletes. These were Šebrle, Krautschanka, the Estonian Mikk Pahapill and the Russian Alexej Syssojew. Pogorelow reached 2.08 m, while Clay was at 1.99 m at the end. But Kasyanov had only jumped 1.96 m and could not make up for it. Clay continued to be the clear leader with 3656 P. Pogorelow had improved to second with a deficit of 146 p, while Hardee was three points behind again third ahead of Krautschanka, who was another seventeen points behind. Kasjanow 172 P behind Clay now fifth. Šebrle was sixth, his gap to Clay was 180 P. He was followed by Drosdow, Schrader and the Cuban Leonel Suárez in ninth.
In the 400-meter run , the final discipline of the first day, the British Daniel Awde, who had remained below his level so far, was the fastest with 47.16 s. It was followed by Krautschanka - 47.30 s, Kasjanow - 47.70 s, Hardee - 47.75 s and Suárez - 47.91 s. Clay scored 48.92 seconds. With 49.54 s, Šebrle remained well below his potential. After five disciplines Clay was leading with a good 4521 points. But it had become a little tighter again. Krautschanka was second and had reduced his deficit to 88 P. Hardee followed five more points ahead of Kasjanow and Šebrle. Suárez, who was particularly strong on the second day, was sixth, 203 p behind Clay. Pogorelow was seventh ahead of Schrader. Addy and Smith.
On the second day, García undercut the 14-second mark with 13.90 s and Clay with 13.93 s over 110 meter hurdles . The Estonians Andres Raja, Smith - 14.08 s - and Suárez - 14.15 s came closest to them with 14.06 s. Šebrle actually scored 14.71 s for him, which was indisputable, and thus had no chance in the fight for the medals. Clay, who now had 5505 points in his account, extended his lead to 124 points ahead of Krautschanka. The order behind it had hardly changed. Hardee was third with 128 points, Kasyanow fourth, 170 points behind Clay. Suárez was already more than two hundred points behind the leader and improved to fifth. Pogorelow, Šebrle, García and Smith followed.
In the discus , Clay extended his lead. He reached 53.79 m, with which he achieved the greatest distance here. Smith, Sepehrzad and Pogorelow also surpassed the 50-meter mark. Kasjanow was not far behind with 48.39 m, while Suárez, Krautschanka and Hardee remained clearly under 45 m with their widths. In the intermediate standings, things now looked very good for Clay, who had reached 6455 points. Kasyanow, who had regained second place, was already 283 P behind the American. It was followed by Krautschanka - 216 P back, Hardee - 241 P, Smith - 385 P, Pogorelow - 386 P - and Suárez - 443 P back.
The best pole vaulter was the German André Niklaus with 5.20 m. Another five athletes exceeded the 5-meter mark: Drosdow jumped 5.10 P, Clay, Krautschanka, Pogorelow and the Frenchman Romain Barras booked 5.00 m each. Hardee got in at 4.70 m, but had three failed attempts and was thus without height. After this exercise he dropped out of the competition. At the top was Clay, who was more than three hundred points ahead with 7365 points. With his good pole vault result, Krautschanke brought back second place. Pogorelow was seventy points behind him in third. Kasyanow, Smith and Suarez followed. The Cuban was 147 P behind on the bronze place. But as a brilliant javelin thrower, the situation was not yet hopeless.
Three athletes threw the javelin more than seventy meters: Suárez - 73.98 m -, the Belgian Eugene Martineau - 71.44 m - and Clay - 70.97 m. Of the top athletes, Pogorelow came closest to these three with his 64.01 m, while Krautschanka, Kasyanow and Smith were far behind. After the penultimate exercise, Clay had extended his lead to 499 P with 8269 points. Krautschanka was second with a 27 P lead over Pogorelow and Suárez, who were jointly third. More than 150 P behind it followed Šebrle and Barras. In the last discipline, Clay could no longer be overtaken except in the event of a fall or injury. The battle for silver and bronze, on the other hand, was completely open. The decision about the two remaining medals had to be made between Krautschanka, Pogorelow and Suárez, who met directly in the second and last run.
The fastest 1500-meter runner in the field was Schrader with 4: 26.77 minutes in run one. In the second race, Krautschanka won in 4: 27.47 minutes, followed by Kasjanow in 4: 28.94 minutes and Suarez in 4: 29.17 minutes. Pogorelow and Clay finished in the last two places of this run with times of more than five minutes. With that the decision was made. Bryan Clay was Olympic champion with 8791 points. Andrej Krautschanka achieved silver 240 points behind him, Leonel Suárez was bronze medalist with a further 24 points behind and set a new Cuban record with 8527 points. Alexandr Pogorelow took fourth place ahead of Romain Barras. Roman Šebrle had to be satisfied with sixth place this time. Oleksij Kasjanow was seventh ahead of André Niklaus.
Bryan Clay won the twelfth gold medal for the United States in the decathlon .
The Belarusian Andrei Krautschanka and the Cuban Leonel Suárez won the first medals for their associations in this discipline.
Bottom line
Gold medalist Bryan Clay, USA
Silver medalist Andrei Krautschanka from Belarus
Bronze medalist Leonel Suárez from Cuba
The Estonian Mikk Pahapill reached eleventh place
