The men's decathlon at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal was played on July 29 and 30, 1976 in the Montreal Olympic Stadium. 28 athletes took part, of which 23 finished the competition. A decathlon table modified in 1971 was used as the basis for calculating the scores.

The American Bruce Jenner became Olympic champion . He won with a new world record number of points ahead of Guido Kratschmer from the Federal Republic of Germany and the 1972 Olympic champion , Mykola Awilow from the Soviet Union.

In addition to the medalist Kratschmer, Claus Marek and Eberhard Stroot also competed for the Federal Republic of Germany . Marek was tenth, Stroot was 21st.
The GDR was represented by Siegfried Stark , who was sixth. Georg Werthner and Sepp Zeilbauer took part
from Austria . Zeilbauer stopped the competition after the eighth discipline, Werthner reached 16th place. Athletes from Switzerland and Liechtenstein did not take part.

Existing records

World record Bruce Jenner ( USA ) United StatesUnited States  8538 points (8454) Eugene , USA June 26, 1976
Olympic record Mykola Awilow ( Soviet Union ) Soviet Union 1955Soviet Union  8454 points (8466) Decathlon of Munich , Federal Republic of Germany September 8, 1972

Remarks:

  • The scores result from the decathlon table developed in 1971. The number of points is given in brackets that would have been obtained using the current ranking table from 1985.
  • According to today's rating system, Mykola Awilow would still have the world record with 8466 points before the competition of these games, because Bruce Jenner's performance from his decathlon in June 1976 would not have been enough to surpass Awilow. But these comparisons are of course only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.

Conducting the competition

The decathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days. The scoring was based on the points table from 1971.

Course and result

Date: July 29-30, 1976, pm

American Bruce Jenner, who had broken the world record twice in August 1975 and June of the Olympic season, was the favorite . But also the 1972 Olympic champion , Mykola Awilow, who four years earlier had been at a similar level of performance as Jenner now, should not be underestimated. Another candidate for a medal was Ryszard Skowronek from Poland, who had become European champion in 1974 ahead of Yves Leroy, who did not run here, and Guido Kratschmer.

The competition was at a very high level. After the 100-meter run and the long jump , the first two disciplines, the three German athletes Kratschmer, Eberhard Stroot and Claus Marek were in the lead. Jenner was sixth, 105 points behind, while Awilow was eighth, 115 points behind. Even after the shot put , Kratschmer stayed ahead, Jenner was now 69 points behind. The best shot putter, Raimo Pihl from Sweden, was third, behind him were Awilow, the Austrian Sepp Zeilbauer and the Finn Johannes Lahti. In the high jump Avilov played out his great strength and jumped over 2.14 m. He was now 18 points behind Kratschmer and 51 points ahead of Jenner, who was now third. After the 400-meter run , the last discipline of the first day, everything came closer together. There were just 224 points between first and ninth place. Kratschmer led with 4,333 points ahead of Awilow and Jenner, who were only slightly behind with 16 and 20 points respectively.

Awilow was the fastest over the 110 meter hurdles . With 14.58 seconds, Kratschmer was a bit behind his possibilities. The Soviet decathlete now took the lead just ahead of Kratschmer and Jenner. Even after the discus throw , Awilow stayed ahead, Kratschmer was 24 points behind, but was only third because Jenner had achieved the best distance and was between the two. With his jump over 4.80 m Jenner took the top position for the first time. Kratschmer was second again, 63 points behind, Awilow only another 13 points back in third. In the javelin throw , the penultimate exercise, the gaps between the three leaders increased again. Jenner was ahead with 88 points, while Kratschmer was 61 points ahead of Awilow. Jenner even had the chance of a new world record with his strong performance. He had to undercut 4:23 min in the final 1500 meter run . With 4: 12.61 min he clearly succeeded and so Bruce Jenner not only secured the gold medal in front of Guido Kratschmer and the 1972 Olympic champion Mykola Awilow. Jenner also improved his own world record by 80 points. With this number of points, he finally surpassed Awilow's performance of 1972 according to the all-round table that is valid today. In addition to the medal winners, Raimo Pihl, Ryszard Skowronek, Siegfried Stark and Leonid Lytwynenko scored more than 8000 points in the next places. The British Daley Thompson, who would write decathlon history in the coming years, landed in eighteenth place at his first Olympic appearance.

Bruce Jenner achieved the ninth Olympic victory of a US decathlete in the 14th Olympic competition. If you add the gold medal recognized by the IOC in 1982 for Jim Thorpe's victory in 1912 , it was the tenth Olympic victory for the USA.

In order to better classify the performance, in addition to the official points according to the rating table from 1971, the number of points converted according to the current rating system from 1985 is also given. According to this table that is valid today, there would have been only a few deviations: Ranks seven / eight, fifteen / sixteen and 19/20 would have been swapped. Otherwise the order would be unchanged. But these comparisons are of course only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
