Career

In 1971, shortly before his 19th birthday, Zeilbauer competed at the European Championships in Helsinki and improved Horst Mandl's national record and at the same time his national record with 7841 points (or 7783 points, in brackets the points after the rating valid since 1985) own junior world record. In this competition, he had already improved Helmut Donner's nine-year-old national record with a high jump of 2.04 m . The following year he took part in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and was ninth with 7741 points (7694). In 1973 he moved from Mürzzuschlag to ATSE Graz . This season he increased the national record twice, in Innsbruck he scored 8136 points (8112) and also improved the national record in the long jump to 7.55 m.

In 1974 he reached seventh place at the European Championships in Rome with 7792 points (7726). In 1976, starting again for the MLG from Mürzzuschlag, he set the state record to 8310 points (8219) at the Götzis all- around meeting , his fifth and last improvement on the state record. With this performance he finished second in Götzis behind the German Guido Kratschmer . At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Kratschmer came second. Zeilbauer did not make a valid attempt in the pole vault, whereupon he gave up.

At the European Championships in Prague in 1978 , Zeilbauer scored 7988 points (7969) and took fourth place. However , he was over 200 points behind the bronze medal from Siegfried Stark from the GDR. In 1980 he reached fifth place at the Olympic Games in Moscow with 8007 points (7989), one place behind his compatriot Georg Werthner .

Zeilbauer was Austrian decathlon champion in 1973, 1974, 1976, 1978 and 1981, where he and Werthner dominated the decathlon in Austria for over a decade. In addition to the decathlon, Zeilbauer won other championship titles: 1971 in the pentathlon , 1974, 1978 and 1979 in the 110-meter hurdles and 1975 and 1976 in the pole vault .

In contrast to Georg Werthner, Zeilbauer was also quite successful at the Mösle all-around meeting in Götzis. In six starts from 1976 to 1981 he won twice, in 1977 and 1981, and came second and third once each. He made a significant contribution to the popularity of this meeting in Austria.

In 1975, 1977 and 1979 Zeilbauer won the decathlon at the Universiade . In 1981 he finished his studies and ended his career.

Sepp Zeilbauer is 1.92 m tall and weighed 93 kg during his active time. He is a teacher at the Bundesgymnasium / Bundesrealgymnasium Oeverseegasse in Graz for the subjects of sport and philosophy and teaches athletics at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz .
