The men's decathlon at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm was held from July 10th to 13th, 1912 in the Stockholm Olympic Stadium. 29 athletes took part.

The decathlon was held for the second time at the Olympic Games after 1904 , the American Jim Thorpe became Olympic champion. His victory was stripped from him in 1913, but was reinstated in 1982 - see the following section . From then on there were two Olympic champions: Jim Thorpe and the Swede Hugo Wieslander . Silver went to his compatriot Charles Lomberg , bronze to Gösta Holmér , also from Sweden.

The Jim Thorpe case

The US all-rounder Jim Thorpe had won the decathlon clearly ahead of the Swede Wieslander. In 1913 it became known that Thorpe had played as a semi-professional baseball before the Stockholm Games and thus violated the amateur rules of the Olympic Games. The IOC stripped him of the gold medal . All the athletes following in the ranking moved up one place.

On October 13, 1982, the IOC made the decision to rehabilitate Jim Thorpe, and declared him joint Olympic champion with Hugo Wieslander. On January 18, 1983, IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch presented the children of the athlete, who died in 1953, with replicas of the 1912 gold medals (for pentathlon and decathlon victories).

Conducting the competition

The disciplines of the decathlon and their order were then the same as they are today. However, the competition was spread over three days. The 29 athletes started on July 13 in the disciplines of 100-meter run , long jump and shot put . On July 14th the high jump , the 400-meter run , the discus throw and the 110-meter hurdles followed , on July 15 the pole vault , the javelin throw and the 1,500-meter run .

Philbrook's throw over 41.56 m was above Martin Sheridan's Olympic record from 1908 (40.89 m). This distance was still not an Olympic record , as the Finn Armas Taipale had improved the record to 45.21 m in the discus throwing competition two days earlier.

As in the pentathlon, Jim Thorpe was the clearly dominant athlete. With 8412.955 points, he set a new world record . The valuation at that time was based on the Olympic records , which was a starting value of 1000 points. According to the current table from 1985, Thorpe scored the equivalent of 6564 points. His case and the final official score with two Olympic champions are described in the section above.

For a better classification of the performance, the points converted according to the current rating system from 1985 are also given. According to this table, which is valid today, there would have been various other placements. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis. This is most noticeable in the pole vault , where people jumped with completely different poles than they do today.
