Harry Babcock (actually Harold Stoddard Babcock ; born December 15, 1890 in Pelham Manor , New York , † June 5, 1965 in Norwalk , Connecticut ) was an American pole vaulter and Olympic champion .
In 1911 Babcock was world best of the year with 3.86 meters, Leyland Scott's unofficial world record was 3.93 meters.
The official world records were only introduced the following year. The American Marc Wright was the first official world record holder with 4.02 meters, set up at the US trials. At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, however, Wright 3.85 meters was only enough for a silver medal. Because Babcock jumped 3.95 meters and won gold. Babcock also competed in the decathlon , but gave up after three competitions.
Harry Babcock was 1.88 m tall and weighed 75 kg during his playing days. He graduated from Columbia University with an engineering degree and worked as a timber merchant in Irvington, New York.
