Guinn Smith

Owen Guinn Smith (born May 2, 1920 in McKinney , Texas , † January 20, 2004 in San Francisco ) was an American athlete .

Born in Texas, Smith went to California with his parents as a child and later studied history in Berkeley . When he started his studies, he was still a high jumper . However, since the university athletics team already had a good high jump team, he switched to the pole vault . In 1941 he won the US university championships. After graduating, he fought as a pilot in World War II . In 1947 he was American champion in pole vault and started in 1948 at the Olympic Games in London . Here he was Olympic champion with a jumped height of 4.30 m in the last attempt.
