Thorn Electrical Industries Ltd. was a British electronics - and defense group , who from 1979 to 1996 with the music company EMI on the company Thorn EMI Ltd. was merged .

history

In March 1928, Jules Thorn founded The Electric Lamp Service Company Ltd. which became THORN Electrical Industries Ltd. in November 1936. was renamed. The original focus of business was the manufacture and sale of electric lamps . However, the company profile was later expanded. With the purchase of Ferguson Radio Corporation, the takeover of Ultra Radio & Television (1961) and several other corporate takeovers , Thorn became one of Great Britain's largest TV and radio manufacturers.

In October 1979 THORN Electrical Industries Ltd. merged. with EMI to form Thorn EMI, one of the UK's largest corporations . On August 16, 1996, the shareholders of Thorn EMI voted to split into the EMI Group and Thorn. In June 1998 the Japanese investment bank Nomura acquired THORN for £ 980 million.

criticism

Since Thorn EMI had over 30 branches in South Africa in the 1980s, despite loud criticism and international calls for boycotts , this amounted to de facto support for the apartheid regime of the time. In addition, some artists criticized the parent company's involvement with the armaments industry.
