Ernest Webb, who had won the silver medal in each of the two walking competitions in 1908 , was considered one of the favorites for the Olympic victory. George Larner , the 1908 winner of both walking distances, had resigned. The Canadian George Goulding, who had finished fourth in the 3,500 meters in 1908, had to give up over 10 miles and had also finished the marathon in 22nd place, showed improved walking discipline and was able to defeat Webb before the Stockholm Games. So it was in Stockholm too . Webb had to be content with silver again. Goulding became Olympic champion and set a new world record .
Of the ten finalists who took part, only four made it to the finish. Three walkers gave up and three others were disqualified under the hawk eyes of the judges for impure walking style.
