Of the eleven finalists, eight came from the USA, a dominance like hardly any other discipline. There were also a Swede, a Canadian and a German. Robert Pasemann failed early and retired with a height of 3.40 m, all other starters reached 3.65 m. The Americans Frank Coyle, Gordon Dukes and Bill Fritz were eliminated at 3.75 m, Sam Bellah failed at 3.80 m. Frank Murphy and Bertil Uggla could not cross the 3.85 m, the Canadian William Halpenny had to retire due to an injury sustained on his second and successful attempt over 3.80 m. Marc Wright and Frank Nelson failed at the next height, 3.95 m, which Harry Babcock had safely crossed in the first attempt. Babcock had the bar set to the new world record height of 4.06 m, but failed with all three attempts.
Overall, the old Olympic record of 3.71 m was improved 17 times in this competition: seven jumpers crossed the 3.75 m, six the 3.80 m, three the 3.85 m and one the 3.95 m.
Babcock's gold medal was the fifth US victory in the fifth Olympic final in the discipline.
