The initial height was 2.50 m. As in the high jump, it was not possible for the participants to skip individual heights. The Canadian Archibald, who was one of the favorites with a best performance close to 3.65 m, retired early. His staff had been lost on the way to Italy. With borrowed material, he could not realize his potential in Athens. At first Söderström dominated, who was the only jumper to cross all heights up to 3.35 m in the first attempt. Then Gonder and Söderström also jumped 3.40 m, but failed at 3.50 m. The Swede's staff broke on the third attempt above this height. A jump-off was set between the two jumpers, in which Gonder crossed the height of 3.50 m in the first round.

Remarks

  1. In unofficial demonstration competitions, Gonder even jumped 3.80 m (1905 in Gradignan ) and 4.00 m (1906 in Bordeaux ).
  2. The information is based on Kluge. "Sports-Reference" also leads the two Greeks with 3.00 meters and accordingly has five jumpers together on this place.
