Hawtrey took the lead after two miles and won the race safely. Svanberg's second place was also safe. For third place, Daly and Dahl fought a head-to-head fight on the home straight. In doing so, Daly left the straight line several times and thus prevented Dahl from overtaking. Whether this was intentional or due to Daly's exhaustion is unclear. Nevertheless, the Irishman was disqualified one day after the competition.
