John McGough

John McGough (born December 13, 1876 in Monaghan , † 1967 ) was a British athlete who was successful as a middle-distance runner at the beginning of the 20th century .

He was born in Ireland but lived most of his life in Scotland . He worked at the post office in Glasgow , where he was also a member of the Bellahouston Harriers.

Career

John McGough won a total of 15 Scottish (sc) and Irish (ir) national championships:

He also took part in two Olympic Games: the 1906 Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens and the 1908 Olympic Games in London.

  • In Athens he started over 800 m , 1500 m and 5 miles.
    • Over 800 m he was eliminated in the preliminary run. Its time has not been determined.
    • Over 1500 m he won his heat in 4: 18.8 minutes. In the final he was able to improve significantly and at the finish was just behind the American James Lightbody , who won the gold medal in 4: 12.0 minutes. John McGough came in second in 4: 12.6 minutes ahead of Sweden's Kristian Hellström (third in 4: 13.4 minutes).
    • He reached the finish line over five miles, but didn't make the top three. Its time has not been determined.
  • In London, McGough only started on his special course, the 1500 m, and was third in his heat in 4: 16.4 minutes. He was eliminated because only the preliminary winners were considered qualified.
