The competition dragged on for many hours due to the unfortunate requirements (increase by one centimeter and prohibition to skip a height). After eight jumpers had crossed 1.65 m, it was decided to raise the bar by 2.5 centimeters each. With five remaining participants, the high jump was interrupted in the evening due to darkness. The next day the Olympic and medalists were determined. Leahy finally tried his hand at 1.85 m, but failed twice and skipped the third attempt.
