The top favorites were the two US jumpers Walt Davis and Ken Wiesner, who jumped in the straddle technique . Both crossed all heights up to 2.01 m in the first attempt, except the 1.70 m, which both left out. Davis also managed 2.04 m in the first attempt, while Wiesner failed at this height. The 2.07 m was then too high for Davis. Third place went to the Brazilian José Telles da Conceição with a jump of 1.98 m.
José Telles da Conceição won the first high jump medal for Brazil.
