Cornelius Cooper "Corny" Johnson (born August 21, 1913 in Los Angeles , California , † February 15, 1946 in San Francisco ) was an American high jumper and Olympic champion .

At the 1932 Olympics in his hometown of Los Angeles, he finished fourth after missing a medal in the jump-off. From 1932 to 1936 he was AAU master without interruption. In qualifying for the 1936 Olympic Games on July 12, 1936 in New York , the two high jumpers Johnson and Dave Albritton won together with the world record height of 2.07 m. While Johnson was jumping the western roll that was common at the time , Albritton was the first straddle-style world record holder .

At the Olympic Games in Berlin , Johnson won the gold medal with an Olympic record of 2.03 m ahead of Albritton, who jumped 2.00 m. During the games, Adolf Hitler received all athletics medal winners in his box of honor. Due to the late outcome of the high jump competition, he had already left the sports facility. Since Johnson and Albritton were African American , this was viewed by the international press as a deliberate disregard for black Americans. The IOC intervened, calling for "all or none". Hitler decided to only congratulate the German medal winners in the honor box.

Johnson was inducted into the Hall of Fame for American Athletes. In 1938 he ended his sporting career. He died of pneumonia in 1946 .
