The 1948 Olympic champion Fanny Blankers-Koen (NED), also European champion and world record holder, had canceled the competition due to illness. She wanted to concentrate completely on the 80-meter hurdles . The Australian Marjorie Jackson was the clear favorite for the Olympic victory after her superior performance over 100 meters .
In the preliminary round she set the world record and improved it in the semifinals by two tenths of a second to 23.4 seconds. In the final, she dominated the race from the start and won by almost four meters. The silver medal went to the Dutch Bertha Brouwer ahead of Nadezhda Chnykina from the USSR, which took place after the official hand stop.
