For the final on August 9, 1984, three Americans, two French, two Jamaicans and one British had qualified. The Olympic boycott of numerous countries prevented the participation of the world record holder Marita Koch from the GDR. The Jamaican Merlene Ottey-Page became the favorite. The American Florence Griffith was seen as her main competitor.
Griffith and Valerie Brisco-Hooks got the quickest start in the final. Ottey-Page and British Kathy Cook, formerly Kathy Smallwood, followed. At the start of the home stretch, Valerie Brisco-Hooks passed Griffith and, after her surprising gold medal, won Olympic gold with a new Olympic record . Florence Griffith came in second, Merlene Ottey-Page had to be content with third. The Jamaican won her second bronze medal in Los Angeles . It was also her second in a row over 200 meters . Kathy Cook was fourth, only a hundredth of a second behind Ottey-Page.
With her final time of 21.81 seconds, Valerie Brisco-Hooks is still in 17th place on the all-time best list as of January 2018.
Three days earlier, Valerie Brisco-Hooks had won the gold medal over 400 meters . She was the first woman at the Olympic Games to be victorious on these two routes in one event.
