The lack of athletes from the boycott states had little impact in this discipline. All top athletes were at the start and the results were at an extremely high level.
All three Americans had qualified for the final. With Carl Lewis , the USA were the favorites. Lewis had set out to win four gold medals - 100 m , 200 m , long jump and 4 × 100 m relay - in Los Angeles, imitating his role model Jesse Owens , who achieved this at the 1936 Berlin Olympics . As an Olympic champion over 100 meters and in the long jump, Lewis was now looking for the third gold medal. His two teammates, Kirk Baptiste and Thomas Jefferson, were among his greatest competitors . In addition to the German runner Ralf Lübke , the final field also included the Italian Pietro Mennea , world record holder and Olympic champion from 1980 , who was in his fourth Olympic final in a row.
Jefferson and Lewis were the quickest starters. But already after 100 meters Lewis had run out of a comfortable lead, which he brought to the finish. Behind him, Baptiste and the Brazilian João Batista da Silva had caught up with Jefferson at the start of the home stretch. Baptiste passed and came closer to Lewis, but it wasn't enough for him. Lewis scored 19.80 s, improving Tommie Smith's 16-year-old Olympic best . Baptiste crossed the finish line six hundredths of a second behind Lewis. Jefferson was able to keep da Silva in check and ensure the total success of the US team. Lübke, last after 100 meters, was able to work his way up to 5th place in front of the French Jean-Jacques Boussemart. Mennea came in seventh ahead of the Briton Ade Mafe .
Carl Lewis ran for the USA's 13th Olympic victory in this discipline. At the same time it was the third triple success of US athletes in this discipline.
