Note:
Even hand-timed times were still part of the official best and record lists at that time, which had an impact on the short distances in particular and led to different records. The official lists consisted of a mixture in which hand-stopped and electronically recorded times rounded to tenths of a second were included. However, since the hand-timed times were about one to two tenths of a second better than the electronically determined values due to the delay in reaction of the timekeepers, there were soon separate lists. From 1977 on, only electronic times were officially kept.

To complete this, here is an overview of the records rounded to tenths of a second, including hand-timed times:

The Jamaican Quarrie was favored, especially after his closest competitor, the US sprinter Steve Williams , was unable to take part in Montreal due to a thigh injury that he sustained at the US Olympic qualifications . Another medal contender was dropped because of the Olympic boycott of the African states, which his country followed. This was James Gilkes from Guyana . The Americans Millard Hampton and Dwayne Evans remained as rivals for Quarrie. The Italian Pietro Mennea also had certain outsider chances.

As expected, the final was tight and exciting. On the home stretch, Quarrie was initially level with Evans. Then the Jamaican developed a small lead, but in the end Millard Hampton came up strongly and overtook Dwayne Evans. Donald Quarrie saved a lead of six hundredths of a second to the finish line and after his silver medal over 100 meters, he has now won gold on the 200-meter course . Pietro Mennea finished fourth, eleven hundredths of a second behind Evans.

Hasely Crawford, the 100 meter winner, suffered a groin injury after the start and fell. He got up and hobbled to the finish after 1: 19.60 minutes. While the SportsReference database states that he was the last to arrive with this time, the official report states that he did not finish the race.

Donald Quarrie achieved the first Jamaican Olympic victory in this discipline.
