Note:
Even hand-timed times were still part of the official best and record lists at that time, which had an impact on the short distances in particular and led to different records. The official lists consisted of a mixture in which hand-stopped and electronically recorded times rounded to tenths of a second were included. However, since the hand-timed times were about one to two tenths of a second better than the electronically determined values due to the delay in reaction of the timekeepers, there were soon separate lists. From 1977 on, only electronic times were officially kept.
To complete this, here is an overview of the records rounded to tenths of a second, including hand-timed times:

Jamaican Donald Quarrie was a slight favorite, especially after one of his closest rivals, US sprinter Steve Williams , was unable to compete in Montreal due to a thigh injury sustained during the US Olympic qualifications . Although the Olympic champion from Munich , Valery Borsow, was also back at the start, he was not rated as strong as four years earlier. Overall, the preliminary work of the sprinters involved meant that an open and concise decision could be expected. Another finalist from Munich - Hasely Crawford from Trinidad and Tobago - had also qualified for the final.

Borsow and US runner Harvey Glance were in the lead after the start. Donald Quarrie passed them 20 meters from the finish line, but was passed by Crawford himself, who was Olympic champion two hundredths of a second ahead. Valery Borsow won the bronze medal ahead of Harvey Glance and Guy Abrahams from Panama.

Hasely Crawford achieved the first Olympic victory for Trinidad and Tobago.

For the second time since 1928 , there was no medal for a US athlete.
