Vasilis Papageorgopoulos ( Greek Βασίλης Παπαγεωργόπουλος , born June 27, 1947 in Thessaloniki ) is a former Greek sprinter and politician .

Life

In 1971 he was fifth over 60 m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Sofia . Over 100 m he won bronze at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki and gold at the Mediterranean Games .

In the following year he won bronze over 50 m at the European Indoor Championships in Grenoble and reached the semi-finals over 100 m at the Olympic Games in Munich , where he did not start from the quarter-finals due to a groin injury.

Eighth place over 60 m at the 1974 European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg was followed by the silver medal at the 1975 Mediterranean Games over 100 m and at the 1976 European Indoor Championships in Munich over 60 m. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, he was eliminated over 100 m in the preliminary run.

From 1981 to 1998, the trained dentist was a member of the Greek Parliament for the New Democracy . Under Konstantinos Mitsotakis he was Deputy Minister of Culture from 1991 to 1992, responsible for the field of sport. From 1999 to 2010 he was mayor of Thessaloniki. His successor Giannis Boutaris accused him of having concealed the city's financial position when he took office.

In 2011 he was summoned by a committee that investigated the misappropriation of 51.4 million euros in city funds. In February 2013, Papageorgopoulos and two other co-defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment in the first instance because he had approved the embezzlement. He denied the allegations and announced that he would appeal.
