The favorite was originally the 1972 Ugandan Olympic champion , John Akii-Bua , who was unable to take part due to the boycott of the African states, which Uganda had also joined. So there was no clear gold candidate. The circle of medal contenders included the Americans Edwin Moses, Quentin Wheeler and Michael Shine as well as the medal winners of the 1974 European Championships , Alan Pascoe, Great Britain, who suffered from a leg injury, Jean-Claude Nallet, France, and Yevgeny Gavrilenko, USSR. Nallet was eliminated from the co-favorites in the semifinals. In contrast, Edwin Moses was particularly strong in his semi-finals.

Moses dominated the final race from the start. He set a sharp pace that none of his opponents could match in this form. Edwin Moses turned into the home straight with a clear lead, increased the gap even further and became Olympic champion with a lead of 1.05 seconds over Michael Shine. Yevgeny Gavrilenko won the bronze medal, 17 hundredths of a second behind, ahead of Quentin Wheeler and the Portuguese José Carvalho. These five runners undercut the 50-second mark. Seven finalists each remained under this brand in Mexico City and Munich . Edwin Moses set a new world record with 47.64 seconds and undercut John Akii-Bua's winning time in Munich by almost two tenths of a second.

Edwin Moses won the twelfth US gold medal in the 16th Olympic final over 400 meter hurdles . At the same time it was the sixth double success of the USA at the Olympic Games over this distance.
