The favorite was initially Ralph Mann from the United States, who traveled to Munich as the best of the year in the world . The British world record holder and Olympic gold medalist from 1968 , David Hemery, had a long break from competition and did not return to competitive sport until the beginning of the Olympic year. After initially weaker times, he had increased his level of performance considerably when he returned, so that he had to be counted at least among the wider circle of medal contenders.

Hemery started the final race at high speed, as he did with his Olympic gold medal in Mexico City, and led the field. At the start of the home stretch, outsider John Akii-Bua from Uganda caught up and passed the British man almost effortlessly. Akii-Bua continued to increase his lead over the entire field and was the first athlete to finish the distance in under 48 seconds. Silver went to Ralph Mann, who was able to beat David Hemery, who was declining in the end, with a hundredth of a second. The American Jim Seymour had also made up a lot of ground on Hemery, but could no longer achieve a medal place. With a clear gap to Seymour, the German Rainer Schubert finished fifth.

John Akii-Bua was the first Olympic champion from Uganda. He also performed a lap of honor for the first time .
