Course of competition

Date: September 5, 1972, 2 p.m.

The favorite were the Soviet European champion from 1971 , Weniamin soldiersko, and Bernd Kannenberg from Germany, who set a new world record in May of the Olympic year. The pace was very high from the start. The interim times were far below the values established at earlier major events such as the Olympic Games or European Championships. Above all, Kannenberg was in the lead, his only companion up to kilometer 35 was a military man, all other walkers were clearly behind. The Soviet European champion was given a warning and now had to slow down a bit, taking into account a clean walking technique. As a result, Bernd Kannenberg pulled away and was able to work out a lead of over two minutes to the finish. In his Olympic victory , he improved Abdon Pamich's Olympic record by more than 15 minutes. Weniamin soldiersko also had a lead of more than two minutes on the US walker Larry Young, who had divided the race very well and coming from behind pushed further and further forward. In the end, like in 1968 , he won the bronze medal. Fourth to sixth place went to Otto Bartsch from the USSR, GDR walker Peter Selzer and Gerhard Weidner from the Federal Republic of Germany. The 1968 Olympic champion, Christoph Höhne, crossed the finish line in 14th place, over 24 minutes behind the winner.

At 46 years old, Canadian Alex Oakley was the oldest competitor in the field. In Munich he took part in the Olympic Games for the fourth time.
