Charles Sowa

Charles Sowa (born April 15, 1933 in Schifflingen , Luxembourg ; † July 7, 2013 ) was a Luxembourg walker . The ten-time champion of his home country over 20 km took part in a total of four Summer Olympics.

Sowa won the title ten times at the twelve Luxembourg national championships over 20 km walking between 1960 and 1974, only in 1969 and 1973 he did not become champion.

In 1960 , 1964 , 1968 and 1972 Sowa took on both walking distances at the Olympic Games; over 20 km he always placed between 16th and 19th places, but he was more successful over 50 km , where he twice achieved top 10 places: 1964 in ninth and 1972 in tenth. Another international top 10 placement was a seventh place at the European Athletics Championships in 1969 over 50 km.

His four Olympic participations are the second most for Luxembourg after the gymnast Josy Stoffel .

In 1964, 1967, 1971 and 1972 he was elected Luxembourg Sportsman of the Year .

His son Marco was also a walker, but was disqualified in his only Olympic competition in 1988 over 20 km.
