Note: Officially, the world and Olympic records were rounded to 38.2 seconds. The table above shows the exact electronically measured time that was later added to the leaderboards. So it becomes clear that the winning time of the US season at these games in Munich was faster than the world record that had existed up to that point.

The US team was seen as weakened by the shock of the 100-meter run . Eddie Hart and Rey Robinson had missed their quarterfinals there because they were late. Instead of Robinson, the 200 meter silver medalist Larry Black was nominated. So the Soviet relay team was given a chance to win after Valery Borsov's individual victories over 100 and 200 meters, which also had one of the best starters in their ranks, Alexandr Korneljuk. In any case, the duel between the two favorite teams was eagerly awaited.
In the final race, the starting runners from the USA and the USSR ran head to head. Robert Taylor and Gerald Tinker then worked out a head start for the US team. Although Valery Borsow appeared again on the home stretch, US runner-up Eddie Hart was able to secure the US Olympic victory in a new world record time with a clear lead. The bronze medal was surprisingly won by the four German relay runners.
In the thirteenth Olympic final, the US relay won the eleventh gold medal for the US in this discipline. It was the third in a row.
For the Federal Republic of Germany it was the first medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay - in 1960 the four West German runners Bernd Cullmann , Armin Hary , Walter Mahlendorf and Martin Lauer won the gold medal, but officially as all German and not as West German Season.
