The US season was a favorite. a. with the Olympic champion over 100 meters , Bob Hayes. But four years earlier, the US team had failed due to its transfer problems and here too there was a rather botched first transfer in the run-up. The French and the Germans were rated as strong, but they could not prevail in the semi-finals. The Poles also made a very good impression in the heats.

In the final, the USA took extreme caution in the first two changes, but everything did not go smoothly and the season only ran in fifth place at times. When it was the turn of the final runners, France led Poland and the USA. Hayes had two meters to catch up with Frenchman Jocelyn Delecour. With his outstanding performance, the sprint Olympic champion passed Poland and France and crossed the finish line with a lead of three meters. Despite the change problems, there was also a new world record . Poland's final runner Marian Dudziak was still able to intercept Delecour, so silver went to Poland and bronze to France. However, this order could only be officially established after evaluating the target photo.

For the first time in an Olympic race, all relays stayed below the 40-second mark. The first five teams all ran faster than the current Olympic record . Poland won the first medal in this discipline.
