Menzies Campbell
Walter Menzies Campbell, Baron Campbell of Pittenweem , Kt , CH , CBE , QC ( Ming Campbell for short ; * May 22, 1941 in Glasgow ) is Chancellor of the University of St Andrews and a Scottish politician. He was from 1987 to 2015 deputy in the British House of Commons and from March 2006 to October 2007 Chairman of the Liberal Democrats , succeeding Charles Kennedy . Since 2015 he is a member of the House of Lords .
His middle name is pronounced [ ˈmɪŋɪs ] (see Menzies ).
Life
Menzies Campbell studied law at the University of Glasgow , where he became President of the University Union . He holds an LL.B. and MA . He later received a grant to study at Stanford . Campbell took part in the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 and reached the final with the British 4 x 400 meter relay.
Campbell married Elspeth Mary Urquhart, ex-wife of Sir George Grant-Suttie, 8th Baronet, and daughter of Major-General Roy Urquhart , in June 1970 . The couple have no children, but their wife has a child from their previous marriage. In 2002, Campbell contracted non-Hodgkin's lymphoma , but was cured from it after intensive chemotherapy.
Political career
In 1975 he became chairman of the Scottish Liberals. After three unsuccessful attempts, he was elected to the House of Commons in 1987.
On March 2, 2006 he was elected to succeed Charles Kennedy as chairman of the Liberal Democrats . Opposing candidates were Chris Huhne and Simon Henry Ward Hughes . His positions are most likely to be described as social liberal . So he calls for lower taxation of labor at the expense of higher environmental taxes. Campbell and the Liberal Democrats are the only one of the three major British parties that categorically opposes the Iraq war .
Menzies Campbell resigned on October 15, 2007 as chairman of the Liberal Democrats . Nick Clegg was his successor . Campbell did not run for the general election in 2015 . His party colleague Tim Brett inherited him in his constituency of North East Fife . However, this could not prevail against the SNP candidate Stephen Gethins .
On October 13, 2015, Campbell was named a Life Peer with the title Baron Campbell of Pittenweem , of Pittenweem in the County of Fife . This also made him a member of the House of Lords .
