For the third time this competition was on the Olympic program after 1928 and 1960 . The development had continued rapidly, since the games in Rome the world record had been improved by more than three seconds. The French Maryvonne Dupureur already ran a new Olympic record in the semifinals and was of course a medal candidate . The British 400 meter silver medalist Ann Packer was also highly rated. The current world record holder Dixie Willis could not take part due to an injury.
As expected, Dupureur took the lead right from the start. The pace was extremely high, the 400 m was passed in 58.6 s. Packer designed the race wisely and always stayed in the slipstream of the field. At the start of the home straight, the British accelerated and passed the French woman, who was still leading, almost effortlessly. Ann Packer became Olympic champion in a new world record time, Maryvonne Dupureur was rewarded with the silver medal, and bronze went to Marise Chamberlain from New Zealand. Fourth was the Hungarian Zsuzsa Szabó, followed by the German Antje Gleichfeld, who had set two German records here and repeated her placement from Rome . These five runners were faster than Dupureur on their Olympic record from the semifinals.
Ann Packer, Maryvonne Dupureur and Marise Chamberlain achieve the first medal wins in their countries in this discipline.
