In the final, Australian Marilyn Black took the lead after a very good start, but US runner Edith McGuire quickly came up. When it went into the home stretch, McGuire was clearly ahead and defended her lead to the finish. After finishing second over 100 meters, she was now Olympic champion. Behind her there was a close fight for the silver medal between the Polish Irena Kirszenstein and Marilyn Black, which the Polish narrowly won.
The times in this race were excellent. Edith McGuire improved Wilma Rudolph's Olympic record by two tenths of a second. Irena Kirszenstein and Marilyn Black also stayed below this record. The winner only missed the world record by a tenth of a second.
Irena Kirszenstein won the first Polish medal over 200 meters for women.
