Only three nations were represented in the final. Three runners each came from Jamaica and the USA, two athletes started for the United Team.
World champion Katrin Krabbe had been banned for violating the doping regulations . The favorites were mainly the runners who had finished behind Krabbe at the World Championships last year. These were the US-American Gwen Torrance, here in Barcelona fourth over 100 meters , the Jamaican Merlene Ottey, fifth in the 100-meter final in Barcelona and the Russian Irina Priwalowa, who started for the United Team, 100-meter bronze medalist. After her silver medal over 100 meters, the Jamaican Juliet Cuthbert had to be counted among the favorites.
Gwen Torrance had attracted a lot of attention by accusing two of the three medal winners of the Barcelona 100m final of doping without saying who she was referring to. Shortly before the start of the 200-meter competition, she withdrew her statement.
In the final race, Torrence and Ottey came out of the curve almost evenly, Priwalowa and Cuthbert were only a wafer-thin behind. Gwen Torrence was the runner with the greatest stamina on the home stretch and was an Olympic champion with a margin of just over two tenths of a second. In the fight for the other medals it got closer. Juliet Cuthbert won her second silver medal seven hundredths of a second ahead of Merlene Ottey. A tenth of a second behind Ottey, Irina Priwalowa took fourth place. The American Carlette Guidry came fifth ahead of Grace Jackson from Jamaica.
For the USA it was the third consecutive gold medal over 200 meters for women.
