Summary

Date: 5th / 6th August 1992

The American world champion Dan O'Brien was the favorite for this competition. But he failed in the US Olympic eliminations in New Orleans , when he was in the pole vault without a valid attempt. The 1988 Olympic champion and third place in the World Cup, Christian Schenk, was absent due to an injury. So the circle of favorites was somewhat limited. The Canadian Vice World Champion Mike Smith, the French European Champion Christian Plaziat, the now best American Dave Johnson and fourth of the 1991 World Championships and 1990 European Championships Robert Změlík from Czechoslovakia started with good prospects .

By far the fastest 100-meter runner was the Austrian Gernot Kellermayr in 10.49 s. Plaziat achieved the second best time with 10.70 s before the German Paul Meier and the Czechoslovak Robert Změlík. Změlík was also strong in the long jump with 7.87 m. The Estonian Erki Nool jumped eight centimeters shorter. Změlík took the lead and was eighteen points ahead of Kellermayr, who had achieved 7.83 m in the long jump. Meier followed in third place in the overall standings, ahead of Nool.

To the delight of the local spectators, the Spaniard Antonio Peñalver achieved the largest distance in the shot put with 16.50 m . He achieved a new Olympic best for the shot put in the decathlon. With the American Robert Muzzio, only one other athlete exceeded the 16-meter mark - he had achieved 16.02 m. In the overall standings, Změlík was still ahead of Kellermayr and Meier. The gaps were close and Peñalver was now fourth, thirty points behind.

The American Aric Long was the best decathlete in the high jump . Meier jumped the second highest height with 2.18 m and thus took the lead in the intermediate ranking. Změlík was now forty points behind the German and thirty points ahead of Peñalver. Kellermayr fell back to sixth after his poor high jump performance.

Over 400 meters , Briton David Bigham was the fastest with 47.73 s ahead of Kellermayr. Meier scored 48.33 s and was able to extend his lead. His lead over Změlík was 75 points. Peñalver was even 153 points behind Meier. Kellermayr was able to move up to fourth, while Dave Johnson had moved up to ninth. The half-time ranking reflected the high quality of the decathlon so far: Meier - 4510 P / Změlík - 4435 P / Peñalver - 4357 P / Kellermayr - 4318 P / Ramil Gʻaniyev - 4311 P / Álvaro Burrell - 4308 P.

On the second day, some athletes could no longer maintain the high level. That was not the case with Změlík. After his Olympic decathlon best time in the 110-meter hurdles, he took the lead again with 13.95 seconds. He was now 83 points ahead of Meier, who showed clear weakness in this sixth discipline with 15.22 seconds. Peñalver had come up to 75 points on the leading Změlík with his 14.58 s. Kellermayr was still in fourth place.

In the discus throw , in which the American Muzzio achieved the greatest distance with 47.72 m, Změlík was able to maintain his lead. He reached 41.46 m, while Meier after his 38.70 m by Peñalver - 46.42 m - was pushed into third place. The Spaniard was 61 points behind Změlík. Meier followed 81 points behind Peñalver, who was 61 points ahead of Kellermayr.

Změlík was able to extend his lead on Peñalver after the pole vault , in which the Hungarian Dezső Szabó was the best decathlete with 4.30 m, to 122 points. In third place was the Uzbek Ramil Gʻaniyev, who started for the United Team, reaching 4.90 m. After his 4.60 m, Meier had dropped to fourth place ahead of Kellermayr. Johnson jumped 5.10 m and worked his way up to sixth. There was only nine points difference between G'aniyev and Johnson.

The best javelin thrower was the Frenchman William Motti with 67.50 m. Změlík's width was 58.42 m, which was enough to extend his lead over Peñalver to 129 points. The Spaniard had thrown 58.64 m. The American Johnson, who had managed 49.78 m, was now third, 112 points behind the Spaniard. After his good shot, Motti moved up to fourth place and was 39 points ahead of Meier, who in turn was able to leave Gʻaniyev by seven points.

In the final 1500-meter run , in which the Swiss Beat Gähwiler was the fastest participant with 4: 12.07 min, Změlík's lead was no longer in danger. Peñalver should have run around 23 seconds faster than him, but was on the contrary eleven seconds slower than the Czechoslovak. For Peñalver it was enough to win the silver medal, as Johnson was only one and a half seconds faster and could only make up nine points. Fourth was the Hungarian Szabó, who ran the third fastest time with 4: 19.96 minutes. The American Robert Muzzio was fifth ahead of Paul Meier, William Motti and Ramil Gʻaniyev.

Robert Změlík became the first Olympic champion in Czechoslovakia in the decathlon .

Antonio Peñalver won the first Spanish medal in this discipline.
