Dean Barton-Smith

Dean Barton-Smith (born Dean Bryan Smith ; born November 1, 1967 ) is a former Australian decathlete .

In 1992 he became Australian champion with his personal best of 7964. At the Olympic Games in Barcelona , he finished 19th. This made him the first Deaf Olympian in Australia.

In 1994 he won the national title again and finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria .

He took part in the Deaflympics four times (1985, 1989, 1993 and 2005 ). He won the gold medal in the decathlon in 1989, with 7,423 points it was the world record in deaf sports . In the long jump he won the gold medal in 1989 and 1993. Also in 1993 he won the silver medal in the 100 m run and the 110 m hurdles as well as the bronze medal in the 200 m run. In 2005 he won the silver medal in the javelin and shot put.

For his services to athletics and the deaf sport , he was awarded the Edwin Flack Award in 1998 and was accepted into the Order of Australia as a Member (AM) in 2013 .
