The Deaflympics (from English deaf , "deaf", and Olympics , "Olympic Games") are a competition in the deaf sport held every four years, one year after the Olympic Games , by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) . Summer and winter games are held alternately. Formerly the event was called the Silent World Games for the Deaf (" Silent World Games for the Deaf ") and later the Deaf World Games . Since the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized the Games, they have been referred to as Deaflympics. Deaf people do not take part in the Paralympics .

participation

In many nations, the task of nominating athletes to be sent to the Deaflympics is the responsibility of the national deaf sports association. In Germany the DGS, in Austria the ÖGSV, is responsible for the training camps, nominations and secondments. It is not only important to send the best players to the Deaflympics, many associations also send young, exceptional talents who are then supposed to gain experience for their future careers.

Most famous participants

The best-known Deaflympics participant is probably Terence Parkin , who a year before his victory at the Deaflympics 2001 in Rome also won silver at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney for the 200 m breaststroke.

Deaflympics logo.svg

The logo was developed in 2004 by graphic design artist Ralph Fernandez. It is a positive and strong symbol of the international deaf sports community that combines the strong elements of " sign language ", " deaf ", " international cultures ", "unity" and " continuity ".

The hand signs for “ok” and “good” (index finger tip to thumb tip, with the stripes representing the middle, ring and little finger) are overlapped in a circle. It represents “union” and is the original mark of the “Deaflympics”.

The center of the logo is the iris of the eye. Deaf people define themselves as visual people, they have to use their eyes to communicate.

The logo includes the four colors of the world's national flags. The red, blue, yellow, and green represent the four regional confederations - the Asia Pacific Deaf Confederation, the European Deaf Sport Organization, the Pan American Deaf Sport Organization, and the Confederation of African Deaf Sports.
