The Yllästunturi [ ˈylːæstunturi ] ( Ylläs for short ) is a 718 meter high Tunturi ( Fjell ) in northern Finland . It is located in the area of the municipality of Kolari in the west of the province of Lapland .

At the foot of the mountain there are two villages: Äkäslompolo on the north and Ylläsjärvi on the south. There are two ski sports centers on Yllästunturi: Iso-Ylläs in Ylläsjärvi and Ylläs-Ski in Äkäslompolo. With a total of 53 kilometers of slopes, spread over 61 slopes and 29 lifts, Yllästunturi is one of the largest ski areas in Finland. The skiing centers benefit above all from the long season due to the northern location: At Yllästunturi, north of the Arctic Circle , there is guaranteed snow from October to May.

Sauna gondola

Gondola at Yllästunturi

Since 2008 there has been a sauna gondola on the large gondola lift (with a length of 2 km it is the longest in Finland), the only one of its kind in the world to date. The dimensions of this gondola are not the same as normal gondolas. It is not made of metal, but has a visible wooden paneling and offers space for four people during a 15-minute sauna session (that is how long it takes for the gondola to travel the two 2-kilometer rope from the mountain station to the valley station and back again) . To be on the safe side, both warm clothing and a fire extinguisher are carried.

Before the sauna gondola is ready for use, the sauna heater must be heated with high voltage for 30 minutes. The sauna gondola belongs to the Café Gondel at the mountain station. There is another sauna, showers and a fireplace room that can be used by the gondola sauna-goers.

During the operation of the gondola there is a restaurant in the train station in the mountain station. Tables and armchairs for this are stored outside of operating hours in the 1.70 m high free space that remains under the garage gondolas. According to the cable car manufacturer Doppelmayr, this was an innovative idea from the customer.
