The last discipline of the first day of the decathlon was the 400-meter run . O'Brien was the only one who stayed under 47 seconds. He extended his lead and was now 124 points ahead of Busemann, who was able to push past Huffins. Nool was also now in third place ahead of Huffins. Behind Huffins, the Belarusian Eduard Hämäläinen followed in fifth place ahead of Dvořák. O'Brien's half-time result was excellent with 4592 points, even more amazing were the 4468 points that outsider Busemann had on his half-time account.

Busemann achieved another Olympic best in an Olympic decathlon with 13.47 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles . This enabled him to reduce the gap to O'Brien to 71 points. 88 points behind Busemann, Dvořák and Hämäläinen were tied in third place. It remained tight and high-quality.

After the discus throw , O'Brien increased his lead to 142 points. Hämäläinen, who was six points ahead of Busemann, now followed in second place. Huffins pushed past Dvořák again to fourth place. US athlete Steve Fritz, who achieved the best distance in this discipline, was sixth behind the Czech.

The strongest pole vaulters were Nool, Změlík and the French Sébastien Levicq, who crossed an excellent 5,40 m. O'Brien's lead remained unchanged. Busemann had lost another 61 points and was now together with Fritz 67 points behind Hämäläinen in third place. Huffins, Nool and Dvořák followed.

Dvořák was the only athlete who exceeded the 70-meter mark in the javelin throw . He was able to work his way up to fourth place. He was now 25 points behind Fritz and 29 points ahead of Hämäläinen. Busemann achieved the second best distance with 66.86 m, which brought him back to second place. O'Brien was now 209 points ahead of Busemann, who was eighteen points ahead of Fritz. The favorite from the USA had now clearly separated. In the fight for the other medals, however, it remained very close until the end.

For the final 1500 meter run , this meant that O'Brien was allowed to run thirty seconds slower than Busemann in order to become Olympic champion. To improve his own world record , O'Brien needed 711 points, the equivalent of 4:35 minutes. The American was not a very good middle distance athlete , it was to be seen that it would be difficult for him to reach this time. But his victory was out of the question.

The fastest runner was the Swiss Philipp Huber, who needed 4: 18.15 minutes. Dan O'Brien defended his lead and became the eleventh US Olympic champion in the decathlon. Silver went to Frank Busemann, who was able to reduce his deficit to 114 points. He was the biggest surprise of this decathlon, because nobody had expected him that far ahead. Tomáš Dvořák finished third, displacing Steve Fritz by twenty points from bronze. Eduard Hämäläinen was fifth, ahead of Erki Nool and Robert Změlík.

This decathlon was of an exceptionally high level. The world and Olympic records were narrowly missed, but Dan O'Brien's result was of high quality. The athletes behind him also impressed with their performances. The fifth even surpassed the mark of 8,600 points, and 22 athletes had more than 8,000 points in their accounts.
